Why We Chose to Homeschool
There are so many decisions to be made when taking on the role of “Parent.” Some are easy to make, many are difficult, and (especially with the first child) they all seem to be the ABSOLUTE-MOST-CRITICAL-LIFE-ALTERING-CHOICE-EVER.
However, few are important than choosing how to educate your child. If you are struggling with this, you are not alone.
A lot of the reason this is such a difficult decision is that the best answer lies within your child, and you must choose before he has developed enough to express himself very effectively. No one educational method is well-suited for every person or family; how do you know what will be best before truly getting to know your child’s personality and learning style?
That very conundrum is one of the reasons we have decided to homeschool, at least for now. We are given the freedom to progress at whatever pace works best for us and our children; we are not bound by the school, classroom, or curriculum we are assigned to by the county or state.
Plus, there are so many groups and co-ops for homeschooled kids that we are not worried a bit about whether or not they'll have enough social interaction (thank you, internet!). Homeschooling is becoming more and more common these days; I firmly believe that by the time our kids are teenagers, homeschooling will be just another way some kids receive their education.
Maybe one day we will realize that sending our child(ren) to school is what’s best for them. If that ever happens, then that is what we will do. Ultimately, that is our goal: to do what we feel is best for them. Not to do what is easiest, or most convenient, or what will make our extended families happy. If what’s best for them is easy, convenient, or makes others happy, then that’s great - but first and foremost, it must be in the best interest of our kids.
